A Critique to Cinema Paradiso

It's been almost three decades since the Italian film premiered and brought fame to Italian film-making. The films rhetorical elements and captivating ending left it unquestioned why this movie was framed as one of the classics for movie-watchers worldwide.

The movie was interesting to me because it utilized many rhetorical devices in the film. Truthfully, this film would have been amateur at best at the current standard of editing and modern equipment of film. However, it did well to illustrate key moments in the film such as, when Alfredo was telling Toto a story about the Knight that chased the princess for 99 days and then left. Toto chased the girl for what seemed like months until New Years and then he left. The ending of the story i presumed is that the girl eventually come to him instead and that is how it led to Toto's persistence paying off. Another rhetorical device that there use was the cloth that became unsown as if Toto is travelling back in time. These rhetorical devices not only created depth and richness but also emphasis on that part of the film through repetition. In class, Dr Goh mentioned that if a picture paints a thousand words, a movie is a moving picture which describes a million words. I think that through rhetorical devices it also reduces the complexity of the topic before introducing the film. Another concept in Cognitive Psychology mentioned of the used of rhetorical devices is priming. Priming is the act of increasing the person's availability heuristic tendencies through the simpler primer. This is why the topic followed after the rhetorical device have such emphasis and dramatic effect.

Like any excellent film, there was a spectacular ending to leave the audience with something to remember. It ended with Alfredo giving Toto a parting message which symbolized the ending message that Alfredo wanted depart to Toto. It was a montage of the past films that Alfredo was made to cut out and it was a series of censored clips. A movie always ends with a climax and sometimes it is after the hero went through hardships and obstacles. But in the end, the hero would still find a way to achieve a happy ending. That is what Alfredo wanted to tell to Toto as his final advice as the love of Toto's life left him and his many failed relationships. He wants Toto to persevere and find a happy ending for himself. This could be also explained by another cognitive psychology theory which is the recency effect. This movie ended with such grandeur that it captivated the audience and the audience left acknowledging that it was an excellent film despite several long-winded scenes or outdated filming processes.

Cinema Paradiso is a must-watch, especially for movie enthusiasts that thinks that they can be a movie producer. This film makes you appreciate how a film is made and befitting of the first movie for Psychology of Film PSY 317.
